"The title of the CD 'Rajya Daman Virodhi' itself suggests it has something against the State while 'War and Peace' is about a war in another country.
Pune police had also read out the titles of several other books and CDs allegedly recovered from Gonsalves' house which included CDs titled 'Rajya Daman Virodhi' released by Kabir Kala Manch, 'Marxist Archives' and 'Jai Bhima Comrade' books 'War and Peace', 'Understanding Maoists' and 'RCP Review', and copies of a circular issued by the National Study Circle. Tolstoy's classic novel about Russia during Napoleonic wars became a point of contention during Wednesday's hearing after the Pune Police probing the case claimed that the book was part of the "highly incriminating evidence" it had seized from Gonsalves' house in Mumbai during raids conducted last year. "Why were you keeping this in your house," he had asked Gonsalves. The Bromfield translation is different, and can only give a reader a glimpse into the book that we have come to know as War and Peace.The judge had also referred to a CD titled " Rajya Dhaman Virodhi" and said the title "clearly suggested" it is material against the state. Those 400 pages make the book go a lot faster. "It's a very different take - it's got a different ending. "The question might be, 'Do we need yet another translation by the Pevears, who translate every Russian novel, more than we need a look at something which is really unique and has never been seen by anyone, which is this original version?'" Halpern asks. Halpern says the Bromfield translation is a publishing event: the only English translation of Tolstoy's original version of the book. "So it seemed important to me to clarify that one is a first draft, and one is the complete book that Tolstoy finished and was happy with."īut Daniel Halpern, the publisher at Ecco, which released the Bromfield translation, says it is the original version - the first version that Tolstoy wrote and signed "The End" to. "So much of what is great about War and Peace came in those rewrites," Walther says.
